Storm Summary Number 2 for Southern High Plains to Upper Great
Lakes Winter Storm
NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD
300 AM CST Thu Dec 27 2018

...Strong low pressure system tracking across the Plains is
forecast to bring blizzard conditions across the northern Plains
on Thursday...

Blizzard warnings are now in effect across central and
northeastern South Dakota into southern North Dakota and a small
part of western Minnesota.

Winter storm warnings along with winter weather advisories are in
effect from northeastern New Mexico across the central High Plains
and into much of the northern Plains toward the upper Great Lakes.

For a detailed graphical depiction of the latest watches, warnings
and advisories, please see www.weather.gov

At 200 AM CST...A low pressure system with a minimum central
pressure of 993 mb...29.32 inches...was developing a new center of
circulation over western Oklahoma. Warm and moist air from the
Gulf of Mexico was surging northward ahead of the low pressure
system and an active cold front across the southern Plains where
severe thunderstorms were reported. Meanwhile, arctic air was
filtering southward across the northern Plains where light to
moderate snow covered much of North Dakota into eastern South
Dakota and southern Minnesota. Farther to the south across
central Nebraska and down into the central and southern High
Plains, light to moderate rain was changing over to light snow as
winds shifted to northerly and gusts increased to over 50 mph.
Winds have generally increased in strength over the past few hours
across the central Plains behind a cold front as the new low
pressure circulation intensified and drew colder air from the
north.

The low pressure system is expected to track northeastward across
the central Plains today and toward the upper Great Lakes tonight.
Warm and moist air from the Gulf of Mexico will interact with
arctic air filtering in from the north as the low pressure system
tracks northeastward, resulting in blizzard conditions across
parts of the northern Plains later today. Additional 6 to locally
10 inches of snow is forecast from northern Nebraska across
central Minnesota, increasing to more than a foot possible across
northeastern Minnesota through Friday morning. Blizzard
conditions are forecast for central and northeastern South Dakota
as well as southern North Dakota during the height of the storm
later today. The combination of heavy snow and high winds will
result in hazardous travel conditions in these areas today.

The next storm summary will be issued by the Weather Prediction
Center at 900 AM CST. Please refer to your local National Weather
Service office for additional information on this event.
