At 800 PM CST...A low pressure system with a minimum central
pressure of 994 mb, or 29.35 inches, was located about 80 miles
south of Minneapolis, Minnesota. A front wrapped around on the
backside of this low, and in the cold air to the west and north,
moderate to heavy snow and strong winds continued in the Northern
Plains, Nebraska, and parts of Minnesota. Warm and moist air from
the Gulf of Mexico was surging northward ahead of the low pressure
system and the associated cold front, which was causing a large
swath of moderate to heavy rain from the Ohio Valley through the
Tennessee Valley and into the Southeast and Lower Mississippi
Valley regions. The strongest storms with the heaviest rain rates
were causing flooding in the Southeast and Lower Mississippi
Valley.

The low pressure system will continue moving northeastward through
the Upper Mississippi Valley and Upper Great Lakes regions
tonight, before crossing into Ontario on Friday. As the low tracks
northeastward overnight, strong winds and snow will continue to
produce blizzard conditions over parts of the Northern Plains.
Additional snowfall of 1 to 2 inches is forecast for the Northern
Plains, with 2 to 6 additional inches expected in parts of the
Upper Mississippi Valley and Upper Midwest. The combination of
snow and high winds will make travel extremely difficult across
these areas overnight, and even into Friday due to blowing snow.
Rainfall-wise, thunderstorms are expected to continue pushing
eastward along and ahead of the cold front. There is a High Risk
of excessive rainfall/flash flooding in place overnight in
northeastern Louisiana and southern Mississippi, where greater
than 6 inches of rainfall is possible. On Friday, a Moderate Risk
of excessive rainfall is in place for parts of the Southern and
Central Appalachians, where terrain could enhance rainfall amounts
and abnormally wet soils will cause flooding.
The next storm summary will be issued by the Weather Prediction
Center at 300 AM CST. Please refer to your local National Weather
Service office for additional information on this event.
