...Lingering snow over the Midwest and the Ohio Valley expected to
taper off later today...Snow will continue across the Mid-Atlantic
States today...
Winter Storm Warnings and Advisories remain in effect from eastern
Indiana across portions of the Ohio Valley into the central and
southern Appalachians and much of the interior Mid-Atlantic states
out to the Mid-Atlantic coast.

At 800 AM CST...The center of a surface low pressure system, with
a minimum pressure of 1017 millibars, was moving eastward along
the Tennessee-Kentucky border. Another surface low, with a
minimum pressure of 1016 millibars, continued to develop along a
coastal front and was moving east-northeast just off the North
Carolina coast. National Weather Service radars and surface
observations showed an area of light to moderate snow continued to
linger over the Midwest near a trough of low pressure. Farther to
the east, scattered clusters of snow continued across parts of the
Ohio Valley. Meanwhile, another area of snow that was associated
with the developing coastal low was moving across the northern
Mid-Atlantic states. Farther south, moderate to heavy rain was
moving across southeast Virginia and eastern North Carolina.

The low pressure system over the Tennessee Valley is forecast to
move eastward toward the southern Appalachians today and weaken
into a trough of low pressure tonight. Light snow will come to an
end across the lower Ohio Valley this morning. Meanwhile, the low
pressure center just of the North Carolina coast will rapidly
intensify as it moves out to sea this evening. An area of 4 to 12
inches of total snowfall is forecast from the central Appalachians
eastward across much of the Mid-Atlantic through Sunday, with 8 to
12 inches of snowfall possible near Washington D.C. Locally
higher amounts are possible. Dry air across New England will
result in a sharp cutoff to the snowfall from northern
Pennsylvania into New York City. To the south, freezing rain is
expected to continue into the afternoon today near and east of the
central and southern Appalachians where up to half an inch of ice
accretion could occur, with locally higher amounts possible.
