heavy snow across the northern Plains toward the upper Midwest...

Winter Storm Warnings and Winter Weather Advisories are in effect
for much of the northern Plains into the upper Midwest and parts
of the Great Lakes.

At 200 PM CST...A low pressure system with an estimated central
pressure of 990 mb was moving northeastward across northwestern
Missouri.  National Weather Service radars and surface
observations indicated that moderate to locally heavy snow was
located in the cold air mass across the eastern portion of North
and South Dakota into western Minnesota, roughly sandwiched
between two troughs of low pressure.  Farther east and southeast,
mainly rain, mixing with wet snow, was reported across parts of
the upper Midwest.  Embedded thunderstorms were found across the
Midwest ahead of a pair of warm fronts.  Meanwhile, strong to
severe thunderstorms were moving across the mid-Mississippi Valley
ahead of a cold front.

The low pressure system over the central Plains is expected to
move rapidly northeastward into the Midwest tonight, and across
the Great Lakes into Canada on Sunday.  A swath of snow is
expected to spread across the northern Plains into the upper
Midwest this evening, and then across the upper Great Lakes on
Sunday.  Total snowfall accumulations across these areas should
range from 4 inches to locally a foot possible before the low
moves away into Canada on Sunday.  Some wintry precipitation can
also be expected across New England tonight and into Sunday.
