Storm Summary Number 3 for Central U.S. Heavy Rain and Rockies Snow
NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD
400 PM CDT Tue May 21 2019

...Heavy rain and flash flooding are ongoing in the central U.S.,
as snow occurs in the Rockies...

Flash Flood and Flood Warnings, Watches, and Advisories are
widespread across the Central Plains and the middle Mississippi
Valley, in addition to portions of the Northern High Plains.

Winter Storm Warnings and Winter Weather Advisories are in effect
for higher elevations of the Rockies and into parts of the
Northern High Plains.

For a detailed graphical depiction of the latest watches, warnings
and advisories, please see www.weather.gov

At 300 PM CDT...A surface low pressure system with a central
pressure of 990 mb, or 29.23 inches of mercury, was located in
southwest Kansas. The low was occluded with a cold front extending
southward from western Arkansas through central Texas. National
Weather Service radars and surface observations indicated a squall
line located along this front. In addition, a warm front extended
eastward from the triple point across northern Arkansas and into
the Tennessee Valley. Heavy to moderate rain, with embedded
thunderstorms, was ongoing north of the frontal system across the
Central/Northern Plains and middle Mississippi Valley. Farther
west, a deep upper-level trough centered over the Rockies was
helping cause temperatures that were cold enough for snow in parts
of the Rockies and into the Central High Plains.

The low pressure system is forecast to move northeastward on
Tuesday, and the cold front will move eastward with it, sweeping
out the moisture from the Southern Plains on Tuesday afternoon.
Throughout Tuesday afternoon and evening, ongoing flooding and
flash flooding will continue across the Central Plains and middle
Mississippi Valley. A widespread area of 1-2 inches of rain, with
locally greater amounts, is forecast for much of the Northern
Plains and Mississippi Valley on through Wednesday. Severe weather
is also a threat. Meanwhile, snow up to 1 foot with locally
greater amounts is forecast for higher elevations of the Rockies,
Bighorn Mountains, Wind River Mountains/Tetons, and the Black
Hills over the next couple of days. Some snow could also spread
into the Northern and Central High Plains through Tuesday night.

The next storm summary will be issued by the Weather Prediction
Center at 1000 PM CDT. Please refer to your local National Weather
Service office for additional information on this event.
