beginning to spread into the Northeast states as this major winter
storm continues...
Winter Storm Warnings and Winter Weather Advisories are in effect

and advisories, please see www.weather.gov
At 900 AM EST...A surface low with a central pressure of 1000
millibars, or 29.53 inches of mercury, was situated over eastern
Arkansas, about 50 miles east of Little Rock. From this low, a
warm front extended across the Tennessee Valley, and a leading
cold front stretched south along the Mississippi River. A
secondary front wrapped around the low to the north and west,
delineating the stronger temperature gradient. Surface
observations and National Weather Service radars indicated that
moderate to heavy snow was falling in the Upper Great Lakes region
and northern portions of the Ohio Valley region, while generally
moderate snow had begun to fall in the Lower Great Lakes region as
well. A narrow corridor of mixed precipitation and freezing rain
was located just south of the heavy snow areas, across central
Illinois, Indiana, and Ohio. Farther south, thunderstorms
containing heavy rain were widespread across the Tennessee Valley
and Lower Mississippi Valley. Additionally, a small precipitation
area was located across Arkansas, Oklahoma, and Missouri, which
was snow to the north and west and rain to the east.

The surface low will cross the Tennessee Valley today and move
into the central Appalachians tonight, and then will strengthen as
it tracks northeastward across the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast
coasts on Sunday. North and west of the low track, heavy snow is
likely. Snow is expected to end today over the Mississippi Valley,
after an additional 4 to 6 inches of snow is possible. In the Ohio
Valley, 4 to 8 inches is forecast north of the Ohio River through
Saturday night. However, the highest snowfall totals are expected
across the northern Mid-Atlantic region and the interior
Northeast, with interior areas of Pennsylvania, New York, and New
England seeing as much as 1 to 2 feet of snowfall by Sunday
evening. In addition to the heavy snow, there will be concerns for
ice, as sleet and freezing rain are likely in portions of the Ohio
Valley, northern Mid-Atlantic and southern New England, just south
of the heavy snowfall axis. Localized amounts of a quarter inch or
greater of ice accretion will be possible.
The next storm summary will be issued by the Weather Prediction
Center at 400 PM EST. Please refer to your local National Weather
Service office for additional information on this event.
