Storm Summary Number 4 for Central and Eastern U.S. Winter Storm
NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD
400 PM EST Sat Jan 19 2019

...Snow is falling from Arkansas to New England as this major
winter storm continues...

Winter Storm Warnings and Winter Weather Advisories are in effect
across a large area from the Mississippi Valley to the Midwest,
Ohio Valley, central Appalachians, northern Mid-Atlantic, and the
Northeast.

For a detailed graphical depiction of the latest watches, warnings
and advisories, please see www.weather.gov

At 300 PM EST...A surface low with a central pressure of 996
millibars, or 29.41 inches of mercury, was situated about 60 miles
east of Paducah, Kentucky. From this low, a warm front extended
across the Tennessee Valley, and a leading cold front stretched
south through the Southeast. A secondary front wrapped around the
low to the north and west, delineating the stronger temperature
gradient. Surface observations and National Weather Service radars
indicated that moderate to heavy snow continued to fall in the
Upper Great Lakes region and northern portions of the Ohio Valley
region, and moderate to heavy snow had spread to portions of the
Lower Great Lakes region and Northeast as well. A narrow corridor
of mixed precipitation and freezing rain was located just south of
the heavy snow areas, across central Indiana and Ohio. Farther
south, a line of thunderstorms was located along the first cold
front through the Southeast. Moderate to locally heavy rain was
occurring in the Tennessee Valley and into the Southern and
Central Appalachians. Additionally, precipitation was wrapping
around the low at the junction of the Lower to Middle Mississippi,
Tennessee, and Ohio Valleys. This precipitation was falling in the
form of snow to the north and west and as rain and thunderstorms
along the secondary cold front.

The surface low will continue crossing the Tennessee Valley today
and strengthen as it moves into the Central Appalachians tonight,
and then will track northeastward across the Mid-Atlantic and
Northeast coasts on Sunday. North and west of the low track, heavy
snow is likely. Snow is expected to end today over the Mississippi
Valley, after a few additional inches of snow is possible. In the
Ohio Valley, 4 to 6 additional inches is forecast along and north
of the Ohio River through Saturday night. However, the highest
snowfall totals are expected across the northern Mid-Atlantic
region and the interior Northeast, with interior areas of
Pennsylvania, New York, and New England seeing as much as 1 to 2
feet of snowfall by Sunday evening. In addition to the heavy snow,
there will be concerns for ice. Sleet and freezing rain are likely
in portions of the Ohio Valley, northern Mid-Atlantic, and
southern New York and New England, just south of the heavy
snowfall axis. Localized amounts of a quarter inch or greater of
ice accretion will be possible.

The next storm summary will be issued by the Weather Prediction
Center at 1000 PM EST. Please refer to your local National Weather
Service office for additional information on this event.
