Storm Summary Number 5 for Central and Eastern U.S. Winter Storm
NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD
1000 PM EST Sat Jan 19 2019
...A major winter storm continues to evolve with moderate to heavy
snow currently falling from the Ohio Valley to northern portions
of the Mid-Atlantic region and into the interior of the
Northeast...
Winter Storm Warnings and Winter Weather Advisories are in effect
across a large area from the Ohio Valley and central Appalachians
to the northern Mid-Atlantic and the Northeast.
For a detailed graphical depiction of the latest watches, warnings
and advisories, please see www.weather.gov
At 900 PM EST...A surface low with a central pressure of 995
millibars, or 29.38 inches of mercury, was situated about 35 miles
north of London, Kentucky. From this low, a warm front extended
east across the southern Mid-Atlantic states, and a leading cold
front is seen advancing east across the interior of the Southeast.
A secondary front wrapped around the low to the north and west,
delineating the stronger temperature gradient associated with the
arrival of a modified Arctic airmass. Surface observations and
National Weather Service radars indicated that moderate to heavy
snow continued to fall over portions of the Ohio Valley, lower
Great Lakes region and through much of the northern Mid-Atlantic
region and portions of the interior of the Northeast. A narrow
corridor of mixed precipitation and freezing rain was located just
south of the heavy snow areas closer to the Ohio River and just
north of the Mason-Dixon line. Farther south, an axis of moderate
to locally heavy rain is noted over the central Appalachians, and
the central Mid-Atlantic region, with a band of thunderstorms seen
over the Southeast with a focus on western South Carolina, central
Georgia and the Florida Panhandle.

The surface low will cross the central Appalachians and
Mid-Atlantic region overnight, and then strengthen rapidly as it
tracks northeastward up along the New England coast through
Sunday. Snow will gradually taper down overnight across the Ohio
Valley after a few additional inches of snowfall. However, heavy
snow will continue tonight over the northern Mid-Atlantic region
and continue to overspread the interior of the Northeast going
through Sunday. Interior areas of northern Pennsylvania, New York,
and New England are likely to see as much as 1 to 2 feet of
snowfall by Sunday evening. In addition to the heavy snow, there
will be concerns for ice. Sleet and freezing rain are likely over
portions of the Ohio Valley, northern Mid-Atlantic, and southern
New York and New England, just south of the heavy snowfall axis.
Localized amounts of a quarter inch or greater of ice accretion
will be possible.
The next storm summary will be issued by the Weather Prediction
Center at 400 AM EST. Please refer to your local National Weather
Service office for additional information on this event.
