Storm Summary Number 6 for Central and Eastern U.S. Winter Storm
NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD
400 AM EST Sun Jan 20 2019
...A major winter storm continues to produce a swath of moderate
to heavy snow from the upper Ohio Valley northeastward across
northwest Pennsylvania and the interior of New York and New
England...
Winter Storm Warnings and Winter Weather Advisories are in effect
across a large area from the Ohio Valley and central Appalachians
to the northern Mid-Atlantic and the Northeast.
For a detailed graphical depiction of the latest watches, warnings
and advisories, please see www.weather.gov
At 300 AM EST...A surface low with a central pressure of 992
millibars, or 29.29 inches of mercury, was located near
Clarksburg, West Virginia. A warm front meanwhile extended east
across the central Mid-Atlantic states, and a leading cold front
extending south across the interior of the Southeast. A secondary
front which is wrapped around the low to the north and west,
delineates the stronger temperature gradient associated with the
arrival of a modified Arctic airmass. Surface observations and
National Weather Service radars indicated that moderate to heavy
snow continues to fall over portions of the upper Ohio Valley, the
lower Great Lakes region including northwest Pennsylvania, and
through much of New York and New England. A narrow corridor of
mixed precipitation and freezing rain was noted from areas of
southwest to northeast Pennsylvania, and northeastward across far
southeast New York and far southern New England. Farther south, an
axis of moderate to locally heavy rain seen over the remainder of
the Mid-Atlantic states and the coastal plain of the Southeast
including the Florida Peninsula.

The surface low will cross the Mid-Atlantic region over the next
few hours and will continue to strengthen today as it tracks
northeastward up along the New England coast and then toward Nova
Scotia tonight. Snow will gradually taper down over the next few
hours over the upper Ohio Valley, and areas farther east over the
central Appalachians and northern Mid-Atlantic region where
earlier snow changed over to rain or a mix of sleet and freezing
rain, should see a changeover back to snow this morning before the
precipitation comes to an end. Locally a few additional inches of
snow will be possible here. However, heavy snow will continue over
much of interior New York and New England today where as much as 1
to 2 feet of snowfall can be expected through tonight. Some
concerns will continue for sleet and freezing rain just south of
the heavy snowfall axis and impacting especially areas of
southeast New York and southern and eastern New England today.
Localized amounts of a quarter inch or greater of ice accretion
can be expected.
The next storm summary will be issued by the Weather Prediction
Center at 1000 AM EST. Please refer to your local National Weather
Service office for additional information on this event.
