Storm Summary Message
Storm Summary Number 7 for Central and Eastern U.S. Winter Storm
NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD
1000 AM EST Sun Jan 20 2019
...A major winter storm continues to produce a swath of moderate
to heavy snow across much of the Northeast...
Winter Storm Warnings stretch from eastern portions of the Ohio
Valley region through the Northern Appalachians and into the
Northeast.
Winter Weather Advisories are in effect for the Southern and
Central Appalachians and for coastal New York and southern New
England.
For a detailed graphical depiction of the latest watches, warnings
and advisories, please see www.weather.gov
At 900 AM EST...A surface low with a central pressure of 990
millibars, or 29.23 inches of mercury, was located in northern
Delaware. From this low, a warm front stretched north and east
along the Northeast coast, while a leading cold front extended
southward through the Mid-Atlantic states and western Atlantic
Ocean. A secondary front was present in the Carolinas and Georgia,
delineating the colder modified Arctic air approaching those
areas. Surface observations and National Weather Service radars
indicated that moderate to heavy snow continued to fall over much
of the interior Northeast. Snow showers were also present in
eastern parts of the Ohio Valley region and into the Central and
Northern Appalachians, behind the main system. Just to the south
of the heavy snow, a corridor of mixed precipitation and freezing
rain was seen across southern New England and New York.
Precipitation remained rain across Long Island and coastal
southern New England.

The surface low will continue to strengthen today as it tracks
northeastward up along the Northeast coast and then toward Nova
Scotia tonight. Snow showers may remain over the next few hours
over the Ohio Valley and in the Northern and Central Appalachians.
Locally a few additional inches of snow will be possible in these
areas. However, heavy snow will continue over much of interior New
York and New England today, where as much as 1 to 2 feet of
snowfall can be expected through tonight. Some concerns will
continue for sleet and freezing rain just south of the heavy
snowfall axis, and will impact especially areas of southeast New
York and southern and eastern New England today. Localized amounts
of a quarter inch or greater of ice accretion can be expected.
The next storm summary will be issued by the Weather Prediction
Center at 400 PM EST. Please refer to your local National Weather
Service office for additional information on this event.
