Storm Summary Number 8 for Central and Eastern U.S. Winter Storm
NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD
400 PM EST Sun Jan 20 2019
...A major winter storm continues to produce a swath of moderate
to heavy snow across portions of the Northeast...
Winter Storm Warnings remain in effect for portions of the
Northeast, as well as downwind of Lake Erie.
Winter Weather Advisories are in effect for the higher elevations
of the Southern and Central Appalachians, southern New England,
and near the Great Lakes.
For a detailed graphical depiction of the latest watches, warnings
and advisories, please see www.weather.gov
At 300 PM EST...A surface low with a central pressure of 985
millibars, or 29.09 inches of mercury, was located in southeastern
Massachusetts near Hyannis. From this low, a warm front stretched
north and east along the New England coast, while a leading cold
front extended southward through the western Atlantic Ocean. A
secondary/coastal front was in place north and west of the low,
delineating the stronger temperature gradient with very cold air
on the backside. Surface observations and National Weather Service
radars indicated that moderate to heavy snow continued to fall
over much of northern New England and interior New York. Snow
showers were also present downwind of the Lower Great Lakes and
into the Central and Northern Appalachians, behind the main
system. Just to the south of the heavy snow, a corridor of mixed
precipitation and freezing rain was seen across southern New
England. Precipitation remained rain across Cape Cod and the
islands.
