...A powerful early-season snowstorm is bringing strong winds and
heavy snow to the Northern Plains...

North Dakota as well as parts of western Minnesota. Winter Storm
Warnings and Winter Weather Advisories are in effect for much of
North Dakota, northeast South Dakota, and northwestern Minnesota.
Freeze Warnings and Watches as well as Frost Advisories are in
effect for portions of the Mississippi River Valley and the
Central and Southern Plains.

and advisories, please see www.weather.gov
At 200 AM MDT...Surface observations indicated sharply colder air
spilling south and east behind a well defined front extending from
Ontario through the Ohio/Tennessee Valleys and into the Southeast
and Gulf of Mexico. A surface low with a central pressure of 990
mb, or 29.23 inches of mercury, was identified along an occluded
front in northwestern Minnesota. National Weather Service radar
and surface observations showed moderate snow, with embedded heavy
snow bands, falling across eastern and central North Dakota as
well as western Minnesota. Gusty winds behind the front continued
across the Plains which was also causing blowing and drifting snow
in the Dakotas and Minnesota.

The storm is forecast to remain quasi-staionary over northern
Minnesota through Saturday. Heavy snow will persist across the
Northern Plains and Upper Mississippi Valley on the backside of
the storm. Additional snow accumulations of 2-4 inches are
expected for northern North Dakota. Blowing snow and blizzard
conditions can be life-threatening and make roads impassable,
especially in central/northern North Dakota. Some mixed
precipitation is also possible for portions of the eastern Dakotas
and Minnesota along the transition zone between snow and rain.
Conditions should begin to improve on Sunday as the low begins its
departure into Ontario.
The next Storm Summary will be issued by the Weather Prediction
Center at 900 AM MDT. Please refer to your local National Weather
Service office for additional information on this event.
