North Dakota. Winter Storm Warnings and Winter Weather Advisories
are in effect for much of North Dakota, northeast South Dakota,
and northwestern Minnesota.

At 200 PM MDT...Surface observations indicated sharply colder air
spilling south and east behind a well defined front extending from
Lake Superior through the Mississippi Valley and into far South
Texas. A surface low with a central pressure of 995 mb, or 29.38
inches of mercury, was identified along an occluded front north of
International Falls, Minnesota. National Weather Service radar and
surface observations showed moderate snow, with embedded heavy
snow bands, falling across eastern and central North Dakota.
Periods of light to moderate snow are occurring in northeast South
Dakota and western Minnesota. Gusty winds behind the front
continue across the Plains which is also causing blowing and
drifting snow in the Dakotas and Minnesota.

The storm is forecast to consolidate over northern Minnesota and
remain quasi-stationary there through Saturday. Thus, heavy snow
will persist across the Northern Plains and Upper Mississippi
Valley on the backside of the storm. Additional snow accumulations
of over a foot are likely across north-central North Dakota while
6 to 10 inches are expected for parts of western Minnesota.
Blowing snow and blizzard conditions can be life-threatening and
make roads imapssable, especially in central North Dakota. Some
mixed precipitation is also possible for portions of the eastern
Dakotas and Minnesota along the transition zone between snow and
rain.

The next Storm Summary will be issued by the Weather Prediction
Center at 900 PM MDT. Please refer to your local National Weather
Service office for additional information on this event.
