over central Nebraska with an occluded/cold front extending
southward across the Central Plains and Texas, propelled by a
potent shortwave disturbance aloft. Current impacts from this
powerful winter storm span from the Rockies to the Upper Midwest,
and southward through the Ohio Valley and Middle Mississippi
Valley. Over the past few hours, National Weather Service radars
and surface observations indicated an expanding region of moderate
to locally heavy snow across the Dakotas and western Nebraska, and
lighter snow extending eastward to Minnesota and Wisconsin.
Farther to the south, showers and thunderstorms are ongoing along
the cold front from southern Missouri, western Arkansas eastern
Oklahoma and across along the warm front into to the Ohio Valley.

The storm system will track eastward from Nebraska to the greater
Chicago area by Sunday morning. During this time, the storm will
produce moderate to heavy snow for the northern Plains with
blizzard conditions possible, scattered to numerous
showers/thunderstorms and gusty winds from Texas to the Ohio
Valley, and mixed precipitation across portions of the Upper
Midwest. The surface low is forecast to maintain an intensity
around 990 mb as it tracks towards the Great Lakes region by
Sunday. Severe thunderstorms may develop along the trailing cold
across portions of the Lower Mississippi Valley for Saturday. The
storm will remain over the northern Plains through Saturday before
entering the Northeast Sunday and Monday, where it will continue
to cause hazardous travel conditions. Additional snowfall
accumulations in excess of a foot are possible across portions of
the Dakotas and northern Minnesota/Wisconsin and the Upper
Peninsula through Monday morning.
The next Storm Summary will be issued by the Weather Prediction
Center at 200 PM MST. Please refer to your local National Weather
Service office for additional information on this event.
