Plains to Upper Great Lakes...
Blizzard Warnings are in effect for portions of the
Central/Northern Plains.
Winter Storm Warnings and Watches and Winter Weather Advisories
are in effect from the Central/Northern Plains into the Upper
Midwest, Great Lakes, northern Mid-Atlantic region, and Northeast.
Ice Storm Warnings are in effect for far northwestern Maryland and

At 800 PM CST...A low pressure system with a central pressure of
989 mb, or 29.21 inches of mercury, was located about 50 miles
north of Omaha, Nebraska. An occluded front stretched
southeastward from this low and attached to a cold front, along
and ahead of which strong to severe thunderstorms were occurring
in the Tennessee and Lower Mississippi Valley. North of the low,
areas of moderate to heavy snow were present over the
Central/Northern Plains and into the Upper Midwest and Upper Great
Lakes region. A few National Westher Service surface observations
were reporting mixed precipitation in the Midwest in the
transition zone between rain to the south and snow to the north.
West of the frontal system in the Plains, sustained winds of 30 to
40 mph were common, with higher gusts.

The low pressure system is forecast to track eastward across the
Upper Midwest to Upper Great Lakes region Saturday night into
Sunday, before a new surface low forms in the Mid-Atlantic region
later on Sunday. Heavy snow will continue across the Upper Midwest
to Upper Great Lakes through Sunday, with additional snowfall
amounts of 8 to 18 inches possible there. Wintry precipitation
should start as freezing rain in parts of the Upper Great Lakes to
the northern Mid-Atlantic and into southern portions of the
Northeast. Over a tenth of an inch of accumulated ice is expected,
with locally higher amounts over a quarter of an inch especially
in the central Appalachians. As snow spreads into the Northeast on
Sunday, a long duration snow event will unfold there as the newer
surface low pivots and moves as a nor'easter. Through Tuesday,
over a foot of snow is forecast for northeastern Pennsylvania and
northern New Jersey into much of the Northeast. Additionally, rain
and thunderstorms, some severe through tonight, are expected
farther south along the cold front. Gusty winds should continue
overnight for the Central U.S. on the backside of the systems.
The next Storm Summary will be issued by the Weather Prediction
Center at 300 AM CST. Please refer to your local National Weather
Service office for additional information on this event.
