The low pressure system is forecast to track eastward across the
Upper Midwest to Upper Great Lakes region today, before a new
surface low currently over western North Carolina becomes dominant
over the Mid-Atlantic this evening. Heavy snow will move into the
Northeast tonight, with snowfall amounts of 6 to 12 inches
possible there. Current freezing rain in parts of the northern
Mid-Atlantic and into southern parts of the Northeast will
transition to snow this evening and accumulate less than a tenth
of an inch with locally higher amounts possible. As snow continues
to spread across the Northeast on Sunday night, a long duration
snow event will unfold there as the newer surface low pivots and
moves north as a nor'easter. Through Tuesday, over 8 inches of
snow is forecast for the Central Appalachian plateau, northeastern
Pennsylvania and into much of the Northeast, with higher amounts
near 18 inches expected in higher elevations of New York and New
England. Additionally, rain and thunderstorms are expected farther
south along the cold front. Gusty winds should continue through
Sunday evening for the Central U.S. on the backside of the systems.
The next Storm Summary will be issued by the Weather Prediction
Center at 900 PM CST. Please refer to your local National Weather
Service office for additional information on this event.
