Storm Summary Number 5 for Thanksgiving Week Coast to Coast Winter
Storm
NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD
700 PM PST Thu Nov 28 2019
...A significant winter storm is currently impacting the Central
and Western U.S...
Flash Flood Watches are in effect for southern California and
southern Arizona.
Blizzard Warnings are in effect for northeastern Wyoming and
western South Dakota. Winter Storm Warnings scatter the Northern
Plains, the Rockies and Great Basin from the Dakotas to southern
California. Winter Weather Advisories are in effect across the
Central and Northern Plains and scattered across the Northern and
Central Rockies, the Great Basin and portions of the Southwest.
Winter Storm Watches are in effect for parts of northern
California and from eastern Wyoming to the Upper Mississippi
Valley.
High Wind Watches are in effect across portions of the central
High Plains.
For a detailed graphical depiction of the latest watches, warnings
and advisories, please see www.weather.gov
At 600 PM PST...Surface observations show a trio of low pressure
centers across the Great Basin. A broad and potent upper-level
trough positioned over the western U.S. is responsible for the
myriad of weather impacts spanning from California east to the
southern Plains and north trough the Rockies and into the adjacent
High Plains. National Weather Service radar and surface
observations showed moderate to heavy precipitation tracking
through the Southwest. Mountain snows continue across parts of the
Sierra Nevada and the higher elevations of the Intermountain West.

The storm system is forecast to track over the Rockies overnight
and into Friday morning before entering into the Great Plains by
Friday evening. The storm will spread heavy mountain snow, valley
rain, scattered showers and thunderstorms, gusty winds across the
Rockies and Southwest, and a mix of sleet and freezing rain across
the Great Plains. The winter storm is expected to restrengthen
once it exits the Front Range and produce heavy snow and strong
winds across the Northern Rockies, Central and Northern Plains.
Snow totals over 12 inches are likely in parts of the Dakotas and
the higher elevations of the Rockies. Severe thunderstorms are
possible in the Southern Plains on Friday along the trailing
front. The storm will remain over the Northern Plains through
Saturday before entering the Northeast Sunday and Monday, where it
will continue to cause treacherous travel. Severe storms will
remain in the forecast across the South-Central region on Saturday
as well and strong wind gusts will be common across much of the
nation's Heartland.
The next Storm Summary will be issued by the Weather Prediction
Center at 100 AM PST. Please refer to your local National Weather
Service office for additional information on this event.
