The storm system is slowly tracking toward the Rockies early
Friday morning and is anticipated to exit into the Plains Friday
night. During this time, the storm will spread heavy mountain
snow, valley rain, scattered showers and thunderstorms, gusty
winds across the Rockies and Southwest, and a mix of sleet and
freezing rain across the Great Plains and Upper Midwest. Once over
the Plains, a surface low is forecast to develop over eastern
Colorado and western Nebraska and strengthen as it tracks toward
the Great Lakes region into Sunday. Moderate to heavy snow along
with strong winds will spread from the Northern Rockies into the
Central and Northern Plains into the Upper Mississippi Valley
where snow accumulations exceeding 12 inches will be likely.
Severe thunderstorms may develop along the trailing front in
northeastern Texas and eastern Oklahoma today and portions of the
Lower Mississippi Valley for Saturday. The storm will remain over
the Northern Plains through Saturday before entering the Northeast
Sunday and Monday, where it will continue to cause treacherous
travel.
The next Storm Summary will be issued by the Weather Prediction
Center at 200 PM MST. Please refer to your local National Weather
Service office for additional information on this event.
