At 100 PM MST...A surface low pressure center was located in
northwestern Colorado with an occluded/cold front extending
southward through central New Mexico. Aloft, a broad upper-level
trough over the West was generating widespread snow, rain and
strong winds to nearly a third of the country. Current impacts
from this potent winter storm span from the Intermountain West
across the entire chain of the Rocky Mountains into the adjacent
Great Plains. Over the past few hours, National Weather Service
radar and surface observations showed moderate to heavy
precipitation tracking into New Mexico and Colorado, northward
into central Montana. A separate area of snow, freezing rain and
rain was expanding across the Middle Missouri Valley into southern
Minnesota. Lighter mountain snows continue out West across central
and southern California into sections of the Intermountain West.

The storm system will track from the Rockies this evening into the
Great Plains tonight. During this time, the storm will spread
heavy mountain snow, valley rain, scattered showers/thunderstorms
and gusty winds across the Southwest, Rockies and Plains, with a
mix of snow, sleet and freezing rain across the Great Plains and
Upper Midwest. As the storm crosses the Rocky Mountains, a surface
low is forecast to develop over eastern Colorado and western
Nebraska and strengthen as it tracks toward the Great Lakes region
into Sunday. Moderate to heavy snow along with strong winds will
spread from the Northern Rockies into the Central and Northern
Plains into the Upper Mississippi Valley where snow accumulations
exceeding 12 inches will be likely. Severe thunderstorms may
develop along the trailing front in northeastern Texas and eastern
Oklahoma late Friday and portions of the Lower Mississippi Valley
for Saturday. The storm system will remain over the Northern
Plains through Saturday before entering the Northeast Sunday and
Monday, where it will continue to cause treacherous travel.
The next Storm Summary will be issued by the Weather Prediction
Center at 800 PM MST. Please refer to your local National Weather
Service office for additional information on this event.
