states...
Blizzard Warnings are in effect for northeast Wyoming into western
South Dakota and northwestern Nebraska. Winter Storm Warnings are
in effect across the higher elevations of Utah and Arizona, and
extending eastward across the northern Rocky Mountains, Northern
Plains and Upper Midwest states. Winter Weather Advisories are in
effect across the lower elevations of the central and northern
Rockies, southeastern South Dakota to central Michigan, and
portions of Pennsylvania and New York. Winter Storm Watches are in
effect for portions of Michigan and over portions of the interior
Northeast into the northern Mid-Atlantic region.
High Wind Warnings are in effect from northeastern New Mexico to
southern Nebraska. Wind Advisories are in effect for portions of
central New Mexico, and also for portions of northern Texas,
central Oklahoma, and eastern Kansas. High Wind Watches are in
effect across portions of the Texas Panhandle.
For a detailed graphical depiction of the latest watches, warnings
and advisories, please see www.weather.gov
At 700 PM MST...A 994 mb surface low pressure center was located
over central Colorado with an occluded/cold front extending
southward across western Texas. Aloft, a broad upper-level trough
over the Intermountain West was generating widespread snow, rain
and strong winds to nearly a third of the country. Current
impacts from this potent winter storm span from the Intermountain
West across the entire chain of the Rocky Mountains and most of
the Great Plains. Over the past few hours, National Weather
Service radar and surface observations indicated areas of moderate
to locally heavy snow across portions of the central and northern
Rockies. A separate area of snow, sleet, freezing rain and rain
was expanding across South Dakota, southern Minnesota, and
northern Iowa. Farther to the south, showers and thunderstorms
are ongoing from eastern Oklahoma to the Ohio Valley.

The storm system will track eastward from the Rockies late this
evening to the central Plains later tonight. During this time,
the storm will produce heavy mountain snow over the Rockies,
increasing snow for the northern Plains, scattered
showers/thunderstorms and gusty winds from Texas to the Ohio
Valley, and mixed precipitation across the Upper Midwest. As the
storm crosses the Rocky Mountains, a surface low is forecast to
develop over eastern Colorado and western Nebraska and strengthen
as it tracks toward the Great Lakes region by Sunday. Moderate to
heavy snow along with strong winds will spread from the northern
Rockies into the central and northern Plains into the Upper
Midwest, where snow accumulations exceeding 12 inches will be
likely. Severe thunderstorms may develop along the trailing cold
across portions of the Lower Mississippi Valley for Saturday. The
storm will remain over the northern Plains through Saturday before
entering the Northeast Sunday and Monday, where it will continue
to cause hazardous travel conditions.
The next Storm Summary will be issued by the Weather Prediction
Center at 200 AM MST. Please refer to your local National Weather
Service office for additional information on this event.
