The low center over the U.P. of Michigan will weaken throughout
the day before dissipating tonight over Ontario. An additional 1
to 3" of snow on average is expected throughout Michigan and
across the eastern Great Lakes. A swath of 5 to 8" of snowfall is
forecast for counties of northeast Ohio, northwest Pennsylvania,
and western New York that border Lake Erie. A similar snowfall
forecast is expected for the Tug Hill Plateau of northern New York
but localized amounts over 10" are possible. Gusty winds across
the Upper Midwest and Great Lakes region will continue to result
in areas of blowing and drifting snow, poor visibility, and
hazardous travel conditions this morning. Further east, the
coastal low pressure system east of Massachusetts will intensify
while tracking into the Gulf of Maine this afternoon. This will
bring additional snow and ice across interior portions of the
Northeast. Additional snow accumulations of 6 to 12 inches are
expected across northern Maine with additional ice accumulations
up to a tenth of an inch possible in parts of central Maine. Snow
showers will remain persist across the eastern Great Lakes and New
England tonight with only a couple lingering lake effect snow
bands continuing into New Year's morning.
The next Storm Summary will be issued by the Weather Prediction
Center at 400 PM EST. Please refer to your local National Weather
Service office for additional information on this event.
