Storm and Arctic Outbreak
NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD
1000 AM EST Tue Jan 29 2019

...Snow continues for the Great Lakes region and is moving into
the Northern/Central Appalachians...

Winter Storm Warnings, Watches, and Advisories are in effect for
parts of the southeastern U.S., stretching northeastward through
the Appalachians, Ohio Valley, and the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast,
as well as the Upper Great Lakes region.

For a detailed graphical depiction of the latest watches, warnings
and advisories, please see www.weather.gov

At 900 AM EST...A surface low with a central pressure of 999
millibars, or 29.50 inches, was located in southern Ontario, just
east of Lake Huron. From this low, an occluded front extended
southward through the Lower Great Lakes region and Ohio Valley,
and southwestward through the Tennessee Valley and the Lower
Mississippi Valley into the Gulf of Mexico. A warm front stretched
eastward through the Lower Great Lakes region and Northeast.
National Weather Service radars and surface observations indicated
that light to moderate snow was falling in the Lower Great Lakes
region and the Northern/Central Appalachians. Snow showers were
also reported farther west in portions of the Upper Great Lakes
region and eastern parts of the Ohio Valley. In the Southeast,
mainly rain showers were occurring along the cold front, but a
changeover to snow was reported in Mississippi, and a mix of rain
and snow was seen in southwestern Alabama, northwestern Georgia
and eastern Tennessee. Behind this system, in the Northern Plains,
temperatures continue to fall with observed wind chills reaching
the -50s in parts of northern Minnesota and northeastern North
Dakota.

The surface low will move northward through Ontario and Quebec on
Tuesday, while another low is expected to form along the front and
move northeastward along the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast coast.
Snow will spread across the Northeast today, as 6 to 12 inches of
snow is expected for the interior Northeast, with 3 to 6 inches
possible for northern portions of the Mid-Atlantic states. Farther
south, light snow is expected to continue across parts of the
Lower Mississippi Valley and the Tennessee Valley as the
precipitation changes to snow behind the cold front, and the
Southern/Central Appalachians is expecting 1 to locally 4 inches
of snow. Heavy lake effect snows will remain downwind of the Upper
Great Lakes region in the cold air after the secondary low passes,
with an additional snowfall of more than a foot possible over the
next couple of days. Additionally, an extremely cold arctic
airmass is now approaching much of the Northern Plains, Midwest,
and the Mid-Atlantic/Northeast. Dangerously cold and potentially
record breaking temperatures and wind chills are expected today
and Wednesday, particularly for the Upper Midwest and Northern
Plains, where wind chill values could be as low as 40 to 60
degrees below zero for many locations, including Chicago and
Minneapolis.

The next storm summary will be issued by the Weather Prediction
Center at 400 PM EST. Please refer to your local National Weather
Service office for additional information on this event.
