At 300 PM EST...A surface low with a central pressure of 1003
millibars, or 29.62 inches, was located in Southern Quebec
Ontario, just south of Hudson Bay. From this low, an occluded
front extended southward transitioning into a stationary front
along the Central Appalachians and connecting into a new low in
central Virginia. A cold front extended from the new low through
the Southeast region into the Gulf of Mexico. A warm front
stretched eastward along the St. Lawrence River. National Weather
Service radars and surface observations indicated that light to
moderate snow was falling in the Lower Great Lakes region and the
Northern/Central Appalachians. Snow showers were also reported
farther west in portions of the Upper Great Lakes region and
eastern parts of the Ohio and Tennessee Valleys. In the Southeast,
mainly rain showers were occurring along the cold front. Behind
this system, in the Northern Plains, temperatures continue to fall
with observed wind chills reaching the -50s in parts of northern
Minnesota and northeastern North Dakota.

The surface low will move northward through Quebec on Tuesday and
Wednesday, while the other low is expected to move northeastward
along the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast coast. Snow will continue to
spread across the Northeast tonight, as 6 to 12 inches of snow is
expected for the interior Northeast, with 3 to 6 inches possible
for northern portions of the Mid-Atlantic states. Farther south,
light snow is expected to linger into Wednesday morning with the
Southern/Central Appalachians expecting 1 to locally 4 inches of
snow. Heavy lake effect snows will remain downwind of the Upper
Great Lakes region in the cold air after the secondary low passes,
with an additional snowfall of more than a foot possible over the
next couple of days. Additionally, an extremely cold arctic
air-mass is now entering much of the Northern Plains, Midwest, and
the Mid-Atlantic/Northeast. Dangerously cold and potentially
record breaking temperatures and wind chills are expected tonight
and Wednesday, particularly for the Upper Midwest and Northern
Plains, where wind chill values could be as low as 40 to 60
degrees below zero for many locations, including Chicago and
Minneapolis.
The next storm summary will be issued by the Weather Prediction
Center at 1000 PM EST. Please refer to your local National Weather
Service office for additional information on this event.
