The low pressure system will continue to weaken as it pushes
eastward toward the Southern Plains. The upper level energy
associated with this low pressure system will lift up into the
Northern Plains and Upper Midwest tonight and into tomorrow. An
Arctic cold front will continue descending southward across these
states, bringing frigid air to these regions. This will lead to
heavy snowfall across northeastern Montana, northern North Dakota
and into northern Minnesota. Expect snowfall amounts in these
regions to range between 6 and 10 inches with locally heavier
amounts. Freezing rain mixing with sleet and snow can also be
expected for parts of the Upper Midwest and portions of the Great
Lakes, with ice totals up to a quarter of an inch. Meanwhile,
another digging trough off the West Coast will continue to bring
heavy snowfall for the next few days across the higher elevations
of the western states, including the Sierra Nevada, the Oregon
Cascades, and higher elevations of the northern and central
Rockies in addition to the higher elevations of the Central Great
Basin. Overall, the Sierra Nevada can expect snow totals of up to
6 feet through Monday evening.
The next storm summary will be issued by the Weather Prediction
Center at 100 AM PST. Please refer to your local National Weather
Service office for additional information on this event.
