Storm Summary Number 2 for Plains to Great Lakes Winter and Ice

Heavy snow continues across the Upper Midwest and Upper Great
Lakes, with some reports of freezing rain across the Upper Great
Lakes...meanwhile, showers with a few embedded thunderstorms are
reported in the Ohio Valley southward into the Lower Mississippi
Valley.
Blizzard warnings are in effect from the eastern portions of the
Dakotas in addition to portions of the Upper Midwest and the Upper
Peninsula of Michigan.
Winter Storm warnings and Winter Weather advisories are in effect
for the Northern and Central Plains, parts of the Upper and Middle
Mississippi Valley, Great Lakes, and portions of New England.
Flood Warnings, Advisories, and Watches are in effect from the
Middle Mississippi Valley eastward into the Ohio Valley.

At 200 PM CST...A low pressure system with a central pressure of
1000 mb...29.53 inches...was located near Lafayette, Indiana. From
the low, a warm front extended eastward across the Ohio Valley and
into the Mid-Atlantic, with a cold front stretching southward into
South Texas and into northern Mexico. National Weather Service
doppler radar and surface observations reported moderate to heavy
snow falling across eastern the Upper Midwest and the Upper Great
Lakes. Light to moderate snow was also being reported in portions
of the Central and Northern Plains and parts of the Upper Great
Lakes. Furthermore, ice was impacting some areas across the Ohio
Valley and Upper Great Lakes. A line of light to moderate showers
were also observed from the Ohio Valley southward into the
Tennessee Valley and Lower Mississippi Valley.

The surface low located in the Ohio Valley continues to deepen as
it progresses toward the Great Lakes later this evening. For
today, heavy snow will continue to fall across the Upper Midwest
and Great Lakes today. Expect 3 to 5 inches of additional snow,
with locally higher amounts, across the Upper Midwest and Upper
Great Lakes. Some of these areas will also experience gusty winds,
creating blizzard conditions--particularly along eastern North and
South Dakota and western Minnesota/Iowa. Expect these conditions
to last through tonight. Blizzard conditions will also begin for
portions of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan this evening and
continue into Friday evening. Ice is expected along the transition
zone from rain to snow, with two to four tenths of an inch of
accumulated ice expected for areas from northeast Oklahoma into
southeast Iowa through this afternoon and evening. Additional
light ice accumulations can be expected in the southern portions
of the Upper Midwest and Upper Great Lakes near the transition
zone of rain and snow. Expect rainfall amounts of 1 to 2 inches,
with locally higher amounts, for the Ohio Valley today.
