At 600 AM PST...A deepening upper-level low interacting with an
arctic front is bringing a widespread snowfall event into the
Pacific Northwest. At 6 AM PST, a surface low pressure system
with an estimated central pressure of 994 mb...29.35 inches of
mercury...was moving slowly southward off the coast of northern
Oregon. Satellite imagery, National Weather Service radar and
surface observations indicated that widespread snow associated
with an occluded front was rotating across much of Washington,
across the higher elevations of western Oregon and into northern
California. Scattered areas of snow were also found across parts
of the Intermountain region and along the Sierra Nevada. Rain was
the precipitation type for the lower elevations of western Oregon,
northern California, and down into parts of southern California in
association with another low pressure system.

The low pressure system off the coast of Oregon is expected to
move southward through tonight and is forecast to move onshore
into southwestern Oregon on Sunday. Snow currently over the
Pacific Northwest is expected to continue today before gradually
tapering off from north to south tonight as the system moves
farther to the south. Meanwhile, the snow will overspread the
higher elevations of northern California through tonight including
the Sierra Nevada before becoming more scattered in nature on
Sunday. An additional couple of inches of snow is possible today
across the lower elevations of Washington and Oregon through
tonight, with up to 10 inches possible over the higher elevations
of the interior sections. Farther south, more than a foot of snow
is expected for the higher elevations of northern California
through tonight. The Sierra Nevada is expected to see more than
two feet of snow through tonight. The snow will also spread into
the Intermountain region with up to 8 inches possible through
tonight. Another system is forecast to arrive on Monday, bringing
additional snowfall into the Pacific Northwest.

The next storm summary will be issued by the Weather Prediction
Center at 100 PM PST. Please refer to your local National Weather
Service office for additional information on this event.
