The surface low will continue to consolidate and strengthen
tonight as it moves eastward through the Plains and Mississippi
Valley. This low and the associated upper-level trough will help
create heavy snow for the northern tier of the U.S., with the
Upper Midwest seeing 12 to 18 inches of snow. The low is forecast
to track northeastward through the Upper Great Lakes on Tuesday,
and heavy snow will spread to the Northeast. Snow of over a foot
is expected for the interior Northeast, with mixed precipitation
likely farther south in the major cities of Philadelphia, New York
City, and Boston. A large swath of accumulating freezing rain is
also possible from parts of the Middle Mississippi Valley eastward
into the Great Lakes region, northern Mid-Atlantic, and southern
New England. The highest freezing rain totals of a quarter to half
of an inch of ice are currently expected for parts of the Upper
Great Lakes, as well as for western Pennsylvania and the panhandle
of Maryland. Farther south, heavy rain is likely to continue in
the Mississippi to Tennessee and Ohio Valleys, which will lead to
flooding concerns tonight and into Tuesday.
The next storm summary will be issued by the Weather Prediction
Center at 900 AM CST. Please refer to your local National Weather
Service office for additional information on this event.
