Storm Summary Number 12 for Northern U.S. Winter Storm and Central
U.S. Heavy Rain
NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD
900 AM CST Tue Feb 12 2019
...Moderate to heavy rain continues over the Lower Mississippi
Valley and Ohio Valley, with mixed precipitation and snow in the
Great Lakes and Northeast...
Winter Storm Warnings and Watches and Winter Weather Advisories
stretch from the Upper Midwest across the Great Lakes and
Central/Northern Appalachians into the Northeast.
Flood, Flash Flood Warnings and Watches are in effect across the
Middle/Lower Mississippi Valley, the Great Lakes and the Tennessee
and Ohio Valleys.
Ice Storm Warnings are in effect for northeast Illinois, northeast
Indiana and southeast Michigan.
For a detailed graphical depiction of the latest watches, warnings
and advisories, please see www.weather.gov
At 800 AM CST...An upper-level trough had pushed into the
Mississippi Valley, and a surface low with a central pressure of
1000 mb, or 29.53 inches of mercury, had progressed east into
western Indiana. A warm front extended eastward from the low
across the Ohio Valley before becoming stationary and stretching
south along the windward side of the Appalachians. A cold front
stretched southward through the Lower Mississippi Valley before
orienting zonally across southern Texas. National Weather Service
radars and station observations identified heavy rain across much
of the Ohio/Tennessee and Lower Mississippi Valleys. Ahead of the
warm front, mixed precipitation and freezing rain were observed in
southeastern Michigan. Moderate to heavy snow spread east from the
Upper Midwest across the Great Lakes and into the Northeast.
Precipitation stretched into the Mid-Atlantic as well, with rain
to the south, snow to the north and a transition zone of mixed
precipitation in between.

The surface low will continue to consolidate and strengthen today
as it moves northeastward through southern Ontario. This low and
the associated upper-level trough will help create heavy snow for
the northern tier of the U.S., with the Upper Midwest seeing 6 to
10 inches of additional snow and parts of the Northern
Appalachians getting up to a foot and a half of snow. Mixed
precipitation is likely farther south in the major cities of
Philadelphia, New York City, and Boston. A large swath of
accumulating freezing rain is also possible from parts of the
Great Lakes, northern Mid-Atlantic, and southern New England. The
highest freezing rain totals of a quarter to half of an inch of
ice are currently expected for parts of Pennsylvania, New York and
Maryland. Farther south, heavy rain is likely to continue in the
Tennessee and Ohio Valleys and into the Southern Appalachians,
which will lead to flooding concerns Tuesday into Tuesday evening.
The next storm summary will be issued by the Weather Prediction
Center at 900 PM CST. Please refer to your local National Weather
Service office for additional information on this event.
