While snow showers continue in the West and more snow is expected
there, the first round of snow had ended when the trough pushed
eastward, and the next round will be discussed in a separate storm
summary to be issued later. Farther east, a surface low is
expected to consolidate and strengthen in the lee of the Colorado
Rockies today and move eastward through the Plains and Mississippi
Valley tonight. This low and the associated upper-level trough
will help create heavy snow for the northern tier of the U.S.,
with the Upper Midwest seeing 8 to 12 inches of snow. The low is
forecast to track northeastward through the Upper Great Lakes on
Tuesday, and heavy snow will spread to the Northeast. Snow of over
a foot is expected for the interior Northeast, with mixed
precipitation likely farther south in the major cities of
Philadelphia, New York City, and Boston. A large swath of
accumulating freezing rain is also possible from parts of the
Central Plains eastward into the Middle Mississippi Valley, Great
Lakes region, northern Mid-Atlantic, and southern New England,
with the highest totals of over a half an inch of ice currently
expected for western Pennsylvania and the panhandle of Maryland.
Farther south, heavy rain is likely in the Mississippi to
Tennessee and Lower Ohio Valleys, which will lead to flooding
concerns today and into Tuesday.
The next storm summary will be issued by the Weather Prediction
Center at 300 PM CST. Please refer to your local National Weather
Service office for additional information on this event.
