Storm Summary Number 7 for North-Central U.S. to New England
Winter Storm
NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD
400 AM EST Sat Jan 18 2020
...Snow continues to move out of northern/eastern New England
while Lake Effect Snow bands were intensifying off the Great
Lakes...
Winter Storm Warnings are in effect for Northern Wisconsin, the
Northwest shore of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, Tug Hill and
Southern Adirondacks of New York, southern Vermont, northwestern
Connecticut, northern and western Massachusetts, northern New
Hampshire, and southern Maine.
Lake Effect Snow Warnings are in affect for Northwestern PA, and
far Southwestern NY off Lake Erie.
Winter Weather Advisories are in effect for the remaining western
third of the Upper Peninsula of MI, the bulk of Western and
Northern Lower Peninsula of MI, Northern New York, the remainder
of New England with exception of coastal Connecticut and Rhode
Island.
Lakeshore Flood Warnings are in effect for eastern/southeastern
shores of Lake Michigan, Northern Lake St. Clair, eastern
coastlines of Lake Erie and Lake Ontario.
For a detailed graphical depiction of the latest watches, warnings
and advisories, please see www.weather.gov
At 300 AM EST...Surface observations depicted an elongated (west
to east) low pressure system with a minimum pressure of 999
millibars, or 29.50 inches of mercury, located over northern New
York. National Weather Service Doppler radars continue to show a
shield of moderate snow across northeastern New England. Broken
showers were draped across the south from southern North Carolina
to the Western Panhandle of Florida ahead of the cold front.
Increased thunderstorms were noted within the northeast Gulf of
Mexico as well. Behind the occluded front that extends from the
surface low in New York along the spine of the Appalchian
Mountains, a second push of strong winds and cold air crossing the
Great Lakes supported strong Lake Effect snow bands downstream of
Lake Michigan, Lake Erie and Lake Ontario. Northerly winds off
Lake Superior produced similar band but directed from the north.
