At 1200 PM PST...The axis of a deep upper-level trough continued
to move slowly eastward over the western U.S. as multiple
mid-level disturbances rounded the base of the trough. At the
surface, a complex surface pattern was analyzed from the Midwest
to the West Coast exhibiting multiple waves of low pressure along
several surface fronts. The deepest, most organized low pressure
center was located over northern Minnesota with a minimum central
pressure of 995 mb, or 29.38 inches of mercury. An occluded front
extended southeastward from this low to Indiana where a warm front
extended southeasterly to the Carolinas and a cold front extended
to the southwest into the Southern Plains. A second, stationary
front extended across Oregon, meandering eastward through the
Northern Rockies and into the Central Plains. Surface observations
indicated a bitterly cold arctic airmass to the north of this
front, with temperature readings as low as the negative teens in
Montana and North Dakota and in the single digits to teens
elsewhere. A third cold front extended westward from an area of
low pressure in Southwest Wyoming through the Great Basin before
extending southwestward through central California and into the
Pacific Ocean. Radar observations indicated scattered snowshowers
ongoing across the region. Lighter snow showers continued across
various mountain ranges in vicinity of the stationary front from
Oregon east to Montana and Wyoming. More widespread, moderate snow
was ongoing along the cold front through portions of southeastern
Idaho, northern Utah, northern Nevada, and over the Sierra Nevada
in California. Rainshowers were also ongoing along the central
California Coast and San Joaquin Valley south to the Transverse
Ranges north of Los Angeles, with snow occurring at the higher
elevations. Finally, snow continued in the deformation band ahead
of the occluded front across portions of northern Minnesota,
northern Wisconsin, and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.

Over the next several days, the upper-level trough over the West
is expected to progress slowly east, with multiple disturbances
rounding the the larger-scale system into the week encouraging
additional rounds of snow. At the surface, the current system over
the Midwest will move out through the evening as another system
better organizes and moves east from the Rockies bringing
additional snow to the region Tuesday. Further west, the
stationary front will remain across the Pacific Northwest keeping
the cold air mass in place across the region as periods of
scattered snow continue. Snowfall will also continue ahead of the
cold front over the Central Rockies and Great Basin as it moves to
the southeast into the Southern Rockies and Southwest Tuesday.
Finally, another system will organize off the Northwest coast,
moving into the Pacific Northwest early Tuesday and continuing to
the east and south through the Great Basin, Rockies, and
California into Wednesday and Thursday. Additional scattered
snowfall is likely for the lowlands of the Pacific Northwest and
other mountain ranges across the region. Significant heavy snow is
forecast to continue for the Sierra Nevada. Travel will remain
dangerous and is discouraged as the heavy snow, cold temperatures,
and high winds continue, especially along mountain passes where
long duration closures are likely.

The next Storm Summary will be issued by the Weather Prediction
Center at 100 PM PST Tue Dec 28 2021. Please refer to your local
National Weather Service office for additional information on this
event.
