Over the course of the next 24 hours, the main low pressure center
off the Washington coast will separate from the occluded system to
the northwest and begin moving along a southeastward trajectory
behind a long, winding stationary front extending from the Pacific
Northwest to the Mexico border. As the low pressure center moves,
the connected cold front will also be pulled southward and inland
through the Intermountain West. The movement of this front,
combined with the fresh moisture pulled onshore and the
instability associated with the long stationary front, will bring
continued moderate to heavy snowfall to much of the Pacific
Northwest, the Sierra Nevada, the Northern Great Basin, and the
Northern Rockies. While the Central Great Basin and Central
Rockies will receive snow as well, they will also be subject to
wintry mixed precipitation including rain, sleet, and freezing
rain. Over the next few hours, coastal Oregon will also be at risk
for significant ice accumulations. In all affected locations
travel will be hazardous, particularly in those areas subject to
freezing rain, where roads can become slippery and driving can be
treacherous.
