NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD

and the Ohio and Tennessee Valleys.

Winter Weather Advisories are in effect for eastern Colorado,
portions of New Mexico, the southern Middle Mississippi Valley,

and advisories, please see www.weather.gov

At 800 AM CST...A long, winding stationary front was located over
the Central/Southern Rockies and extended south into Mexico.
Surface observations and doppler radar indicated moderate to heavy
snow was falling along and ahead of this frontal boundary in the
Central/Southern Rockies and Central/Southern Plains, driven in
part by surface shortwave energy and synoptic lift. There were
also traces of icy, mixed precipitation over portions of eastern
Texas, Louisiana, and western Mississippi. Areas of freezing rain
continue across portions of northwest Oregon in and around
Portland.

Over the course of the next 24 hours, in spite of the surface
features remaining relatively the same, the storm system will
spread east, impacting an area extending from the Great Plains all
the way to the Northeast, pushed along by upper-level shortwave
energy. Moderate to heavy snow will be the greatest threat to the
northern portions of the affected areas, with the highest snowfall
accumulations expected along the Texas/Oklahoma border into the
Ohio Valley and the interior Northeast. Further south, the main
threat will be significant ice accumulations from sleet and
freezing rain leading to widespread power outages, with some areas
potentially receiving over a quarter of an inch of ice. In all
affected locations travel will be hazardous, particularly in those
areas subject to sleet and freezing rain, where roads can become
slippery and driving will likely be treacherous.

The next Storm Summary will be issued by the Weather Prediction
Center at 900 AM CST Mon Feb 15 2021. Please refer to your local
National Weather Service office for additional information on this
event.
