At 800 PM CST...A quasi-stationary cold front was draped from the

into the western Gulf of Mexico. A cold, arctic air mass was in
place northwest of the front aided by a strong area of high
pressure in the Northern Plains with a central pressure of 1043

temperatures ranging from the 30s and 40s across southern Texas
northeast to the Mid-Atlantic dropping to the negative teens in
the Northern Plains and Upper Midwest. Doppler radar observations
showed a broad area of precipitation aided by a short-wave aloft
stretching from the Ohio Valley southwest to Texas. The
precipitation was falling as rain in areas where surface
temperatures were above freezing across the Lower Tennessee and
Mississippi Valley and as a wintry mix of freezing rain, sleet,
and snow to the northwest across the Ohio Valley and Mid-South.

As the initial wave of precipitation continues to the northeast,
more significant freezing rain and heavy snow impacts are expected
through Friday stretching from the Southern Plains to the
Northeast. An upper-level trough over the western U.S. will eject
over the Plains and encourage cyclogenesis along the stationary
boundary over the Lower Mississippi Valley by early Thursday
afternoon. This wave of low pressure will move to the east to the
Southern Appalachians through Friday. An area of significant
freezing rain is forecast from the Southern Plains to the
Mid-Atlantic to the northwest of the low track as warm air
overrides the front. Widespread freezing rain totals between 0.1
to 0.25 inches are likely. A more focused area of potentially
damaging freezing rain is expected from southeastern Oklahoma and
northeast Texas northeast to the Lower Ohio Valley, where totals
between 0.25 to 0.5 inches are forecast and isolated totals up to
0.75 inches are possible. Additional significant areas of freezing
rain between 0.25 to 0.5 inches are forecast across portions of
Ohio, Maryland, and Pennsylvania. Furthermore, another area of low
pressure is forecast to form further east along the boundary over
the Atlantic off the coast of North Carolina by early Friday and
lift to the northeast. A band of heavy snow is forecast to develop
on the northwest side of the low from New York through central New
England starting early Friday morning. Snowfall totals greater
than 8 inches are likely through Saturday morning, with snowfall
rates approaching 1-2 inches per hour at times.

The next Storm Summary will be issued by the Weather Prediction
Center at 900 AM CST. Please refer to your local National Weather
Service office for additional information on this event.
