At 800 AM CST...A quasi-stationary cold front was draped from the
Mid-Atlantic southwest through the Lower Mississippi Valley, and
into the western Gulf of Mexico. A cold, arctic air mass was in
place behind of the front with strong high pressure analyzed over
the Upper Great Lakes. Morning Doppler RADAR mosaic imagery
depicted a swath of mixed precipitation and snow north of the
frontal boundary over the Central-Southern Plains and Mississippi
Valley as elevated moisture overruns the shallow Arctic airmass in
place. Scattered convection was noted over portions of Oklahoma
and Arkansas beneath a plume of elevated instability.

As the initial wave of precipitation continues to the northeast,
more significant freezing rain and heavy snow impacts are expected
through Friday stretching from the Southern Plains to the
Northeast. An upper-level trough over the western U.S. will eject
over the Plains and facilitate cyclogenesis along the stationary
boundary over the Lower Mississippi Valley by early Thursday
afternoon. A widespread area of freezing rain is forecast from the
Southern Plains to the Mid-Atlantic to the northwest of the low
track as warm air overrides the Arctic front, with areal averages
of .01-.10" and localized significant accumulations up to .25"
over the Laurel Highlands in PA. Furthermore, coastal low
development tonight into tomorrow will yield heavy snows over the
Northeast and New England, where 8-12 inches of snow are possible.

The next Storm Summary will be issued by the Weather Prediction
Center at 900 PM CST. Please refer to your local National Weather
Service office for additional information on this event.
