Storm Summary Number 03 for Southern Plains to Northeast Winter
Storm
NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD
900 PM CST Thu Feb 24 2022

...A wintry mix will progress northeast into the Ohio Valley and
Mid-Atlantic overnight as heavy snow spreads from the Great Lakes
to the Northeast where significant impacts are expected through
Friday...

Winter Storm Warnings are in effect for much of New England,
eastern New York, and portions of far eastern Wisconsin.

Ice Storm Warnings are in effect for portions of southwest
Pennsylvania and western Maryland.

Winter Weather Advisories are in effect for portions of the Lower
and Middle Mississippi Valley, the Upper and Lower Great Lakes,
the northern Ohio Valley, the northern Mid-Atlantic, and the
Northeast.

For a detailed graphical depiction of the latest watches, warnings
and advisories, please see www.weather.gov

At 800 PM CST...A quasi-stationary boundary was draped from the
Southeast through the Ohio and Tennessee Valleys and into the
western Gulf of Mexico by way of the Lower Mississippi Valley. A
cold, arctic air mass was in place behind the front, forced south
by a large area of high pressure analyzed from the Northern Plains
to the southeastern Canadian Provinces. Doppler radar and surface
observations indicated mixed precipitation was falling just north
of the frontal boundary in an arc extending from eastern Arkansas
to the DelMarVa Peninsula. Even further to the north moderate to
heavy snow was falling across an east-west oriented swath from the
Middle Misssissippi Valley through the Central Great Lakes. Along
and to the south of the frontal boundary warmer air limited
precipitation to fall as rain. Meanwhile, a well definined line of
convection was observed crossing the Mississippi/Alabama border,
fueled by surface instability and frontogenesis generated along
the trailing edge of the front.

Over the course of the next 12 hours preciptiation will continue
to spread north and east as the main wave of low pressure is
pushed northeast by surface high pressure diving even further
south into the Great Plains. Mixed precipitation is forecast to
continue falling just north of the low track as warm air overrides
the Arctic front. Ice accumulations of .10-.25" are expected over
portions of the Ohio Valley and Mid-Atlantic, though isolated
higher totals will be possible in central PA and far western MD.
As for snowfall, moderate accumulations of 4-6" are forecast from
the Upper Midwest through the central Northeast. The heaviest snow
and snowfall rates are expected to develop over the Northeast
early tomorrow as a low positioned offshore the Mid-Atlantic
progresses northward towards the NY/NJ coastline overnight.

The next Storm Summary will be issued by the Weather Prediction
Center at 900 AM CST. Please refer to your local National Weather
Service office for additional information on this event.
