Storm Summary Number 04 for Southern Plains to Northeast Winter
Storm
NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD
900 AM CST Fri Feb 25 2022
...A wintry mix will impact much of the Northeast on Friday, with
significant impacts expected through the evening...
Winter Storm Warnings are in effect for much of New England.
Ice Storm Warnings are in effect for portions of southwest
Pennsylvania.
Winter Weather Advisories are in effect for portions of
northwestern Ohio Valley, the northern Mid-Atlantic, and the
Northeast.
For a detailed graphical depiction of the latest watches, warnings
and advisories, please see www.weather.gov
At 800 AM CST...A coastal low was deepening off the Mid-Atlantic
coast as it tracked northeastward, with a central pressure
analyzed at 1015 mb or 29.97 inches of mercury. The low was
located along a frontal boundary that extended southwestward
through the Carolinas before curving up the Appalachians and
intersecting an occluded boundary and cold front at the triple
point. A deeper, secondary low pressure was analyzed near Erie,
Pennsylvania with the occluded boundary extending southward
towards the triple point. Furthermore, an arctic airmass was
moving southward through western portions of the Southeast behind
an advancing cold front that stretched through Alabama and into
the Gulf of Mexico. Doppler RADAR and surface observations
indicated precipitation was falling just north of the frontal
boundary in an arc extending from western New York to the DelMarVa
Peninsula. A thin stripe of freezing rain and sleet stretched from
eastern Pennsylvania through New Jersey and the southern New
England coastline. Further to the north moderate to heavy snow was
falling across an east-west oriented swath from Lake Ontario
through interior New England and towards the Maine and
Massaschusetts coastline. Along and to the south of the frontal
boundary warmer air limited precipitation to fall as rain.

Within the next 12 hours, mixed precipitation will continue across
much of the Northeast, with additional moderate snow accumulations
of 4-8 inches expected from I-90 and north. South of the axis of
snow, additional ice accumulations of around 0.10" are possible in
northern NJ and along the Long Island Sound northern coastline
where surface temperatures will remain below freezing for the next
several hours. As the system continues its northeastward progress
through Friday, precipitation will begin to taper off from west to
east during the afternoon and early evening.
The next Storm Summary will be issued by the Weather Prediction
Center at 900 PM CST. Please refer to your local National Weather
Service office for additional information on this event.
