...A potent winter storm is spreading snow across the Central
Appalachians and interior Northeast...
Winter Storm Warnings are in effect over portions of the
Appalachians, interior Northeast, and New England.
Winter Weather Advisories are in effect over portions of the
interior Northeast.
Freeze warnings are in effect from southern Louisiana to South
Carolina.
Wind Advisories extend along the Appalachians into New England.

At 900 PM EST...An occluded low pressure center with a minimum
central pressure of 967 mb, or approximately 28.55 inches of
mercury, was analyzed north of New Brunswick. The strong attendant
cold front has since exited the CONUS and continues to surge
eastward into the western Atlantic. In its wake, RADAR and surface
observations detected a band of moderate snow focused over eastern
New England. Meanwhile, light to moderate snowfall was observed
beneath an area of snow squalls over the interior Northeast into
the Mid-Atlantic. Gusty northwesterly winds persisted from the
Mid-Atlantic into New England, with some stations reporting wind
gusts exceeding 30 knots.

The rapidly intensifying low is forecast to quickly lift into the
Canadian Maritimes tonight. An additional 2 to local 4 inches of
snowfall is anticipated from New England through the interior
Northeast, before the snow activity wanes tomorrow morning. In the
wake of the strong front, record breaking low temperatures are
expected over the Southeast tonight, before the airmass moderates
to begin the work week.
