At 900 AM CDT...A multi-faceted and potent storm system continued
to track eastward across the Plains, with the main surface low
analyzed over the ND/MN border with a central pressure of 997mb,
or 29.44 inches of mercury. An occluded boundary extended
southeastward from the low towards a triple point located along
the WI/MN border. A warm front stretched eastward from the triple
point through the Great Lakes region and into southern Ontario and
the Mid-Atlantic, while a cold front progressed eastward through
the Mississippi Valley. Regional Doppler RADAR mosaic imagery and
surface observations continued to show moderate to heavy snowfall
falling across eastern Montana, much of North Dakota and into
eastern Minnesota. In addition to the snow, strong wind gusts of
40-50 mph are being observed across the Dakotas, leading to
blizzard conditions and blowing snow. Further south, thunderstorms
producing locally heavy rainfall and gusty winds continued to move
eastward along the cold front in the central Plains, with the
threat for additional showers and thunderstorms in the warm sector
of this system expected to persist as we head into the afternoon
and nightime hours.

The storm system will continue its northeastward progression into
the Upper Midwest this afternoon, with heavy snow and strong winds
expected to lead to blizzard conditions in North Dakota on the
backside of the system. Record snowfall amounts are expected over
eastern Montana, western North Dakota, and central North Dakota,
with an additional 12-18 inches of snow possible in northwestern
ND through tomorrow evening. Maximum storm total snowfall could
exceed 30" in isolated locations. The combination of heavy snow
and wind gusts to 50 mph will lead to impossible travel conditions
over the next 48 hours. Moreover, widespread power outages, tree
damage, and impacts to livestock are expected through Thursday,
where the WPC WSSI depicts a wide swath of Extreme expected winter
storm impacts. In the warm sector of this system, SPC has issued a
Moderate Risk of severe weather for the lower and middle
Mississippi Valley, where the greatest potential for damaging
winds, large hail and tornadoes exists. Heavy rain also remains a
concern, with a Slight Risk of excessive rainfall noted for an
expansive swath of the Ohio and Lower Mississippi Valleys today.
Meanwhile, the dangerous fire weather threat is expected to
continue for the southern Plains with a Crtital fire (level 2/3)
threat being highlighted by SPC today in northwestern Texas
extending northwestward into eastern New Mexico and southern
Colorado.
The next Storm Summary will be issued by the Weather Prediction
Center at 1000 PM CDT. Please refer to your local National Weather
Service office for additional information on this event.
