At 600 AM PST...A potent storm system continued to press through
the Great Basin, and was analyzed just west of the Four Corners
region. In the wake of a strong Pacific cold front passage, chilly
sub-freezing temperatures were reported this morning over much of
the Great Basin. Meanwhile, a frigid Arctic airmass continued to
surge south over the Northern Plains, ushering in temperatures in
the mid to low teens behind the front. Current surface
observations and RADAR depict scattered areas of moderate to heavy
rain and elevation snow over the Intermountain West associated
with the storm system.

Heavy snowfall is expected today in the mountains over the Desert
Southwest and Four Corners, which could result in hazardous travel
in the terrain. However, the most widespread and substantial
impacts will occur as the system ejects into the Central Plains
tomorrow as a developing low-pressure center tracks eastward. This
will result in heavy snow and possible blizzard conditions across
portions of the Central and Northern High Plains through
Wednesday. A rather broad swath of 12"+ of snow is forecast to
fall along an axis extending from southwestern Nebraska northward
through South Dakota, North Dakota, and eastern Montana, with
localized areas potentially receiving over 2 feet of snow,
especially across southern South Dakota. Multiple days of
significant impacts to travel and infrastructure is expected due
to snow, blowing snow, and freezing rain, with travel becoming
impossible at times.
The next Storm Summary will be issued by the Weather Prediction
Center at 700 PM PST. Please refer to your local National Weather
Service office for additional information on this event.
