At 600 PM PST...A potent storm system continued to track
northeastward across the central Plains, with the main low
analyzed with a central pressure of 990 mb (29.23 in Hg) over
south-central Nebraska. An occluded boundary extended southward
from the low across Nebraska, before connecting to the triple
point near Kansas City, KS. A stationary boundary stretched
eastward from the triple point through Missouri and the Tennessee
Valley, while a cold front extended southward through Oklahoma and
Texas. Meanwhile, a frigid arctic airmass continued to surge south
over the central Plains and Intermountain West, with a southward
advancing cold front analyzed to the southwest of the main low,
ushering in temperatures 10-20 degrees below average behind the
front. Current surface observations and RADAR depicted a broad
swath of moderate to heavy snow along on axis north of the low,
extending from the upper Midwest westward through the northern and
central High Plains and Intermountain West, while a transition
zone consisting of mixed precipitation and freezing rain was
located in western Minnesota and Wisconsin. Moderate to heavy
rainfall was also falling along a north-south axis extending from
the Midwest southward through the Mississippi Valley.

Snow is expected to gradually dissipate across the Intermountain
West overnight, while moderate to heavy snowfall and blizzard
conditions continue across portions of the central and northern
High Plains. A rather broad swath of 12"+ of snow is forecast to
fall along an axis extending from South Dakota northward through
North Dakota, eastern Montana, and the upper Midwest with
localized areas potentially receiving over 2 feet of snow,
especially across the western Dakotas and northeastern Minnesota.
Freezing rain is also expected to continue in the upper Midwest
through Wednesday with up to 0.25" of ice expected to accrue
across the region through tomorrow, especially in portions of
Minnesota and Wisconsin. On a longer-term scale, impacts are
forecast to spread eastward as a secondary low pressure develops
in the Southeast and tracks northeastward along the East Coast,
bringing winter impacts to interior portions of the Mid-Atlantic
and Northeast. Potentially significant freezing rain accretions
are currently forecast along an axis extending from northern
Virginia and Maryland northward across western Pennsylvania toward
Lake Erie. Further north, temperature profiles will be cold enough
to support accumulating snow across the interior Northeast and New
England, with snowfall accumulations up to 12" possible. As a
result of multiple days of snow, blowing snow, and freezing rain
across a broad swath of the country, travel may become dangerous
or impossible at times, so be sure to refer to WPC or your local
NWS office to access the latest forecasts and learn about
potential impacts to your area.

The next Storm Summary will be issued by the Weather Prediction
Center at 700 AM PST. Please refer to your local National Weather
Service office for additional information on this event.
