At 600 AM PST...A potent storm system continued to track
northeastward across the central Plains, with the main low
analyzed with a central pressure of 994 mb (29.35 in Hg) over
northeast Nebraska. An occluded boundary extended southward from
the low across Nebraska, before connecting to the triple point
over southeastern Idaho. A warm frontal boundary stretches
southeastward from the triple point through the lower Midwest into
Kentucky, while a cold front extended southward through the lower
Mississippi Valley. Meanwhile, a frigid arctic airmass continued
to surge south over the central Plains and Intermountain West,
with a southward advancing cold front analyzed to the southwest of
the main low, ushering in temperatures 10-20 degrees below average
behind the front. Current surface observations and RADAR depicted
a broad swath of moderate to heavy snow along on axis north of the
low, extending from the upper Midwest westward through the
northern and central High Plains and Intermountain West, while a
transition zone consisting of mixed precipitation and freezing
rain was located in central Wisconsin. Moderate to heavy rainfall
was also falling along a north-south axis extending from the
Midwest southward through the Mississippi Valley.

Snow is expected to continue gradually dissipating across the
Intermountain West through today, while moderate to heavy snowfall
and blizzard conditions continue across portions of the central
and northern High Plains. An additional few inches of snow is
forecast to fall along an axis extending from Minnesota through
the Dakotas and into Nebraska as the snow starts to clear out
through tonight. Snow will intensify in the upper Midwest as a
secondary low forms over Great Lakes region and enhances lift.
Additional accumulations of up to 1 foot is expected in this area,
with locally higher amounts possible. Freezing rain is also
expected to continue in the upper Midwest through Wednesday with
up to 0.1" possible across north-central Wisconsin and Michigan.
Tonight into tomorrow, impacts are forecast to spread eastward as
another secondary low pressure develops in the Southeast and
tracks northeastward along the East Coast, bringing winter impacts
to interior portions of the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast.
Potentially significant freezing rain accretions of 0.1"+ are
currently forecast along an axis extending from northern Virginia
and Maryland northward across west-central Pennsylvania. Further
north, temperature profiles will be cold enough to support
accumulating snow across the interior Northeast and New England,
with snowfall accumulations up to 12" possible tomorrow and into
this weekend. As a result of multiple days of snow, blowing snow,
and freezing rain across a broad swath of the country, travel may
become dangerous or impossible at times, so be sure to refer to
WPC or your local NWS office to access the latest forecasts and
learn about potential impacts to your area.

The next Storm Summary will be issued by the Weather Prediction
Center at 700 PM PST. Please refer to your local National Weather
Service office for additional information on this event.
