Appalachians, upstate New York, and New England.

large areas of the central and eastern U.S.

and advisories, please see www.weather.gov

At 800 AM CST...A deepening low-pressure system continued to track
across the eastern Great Lakes and southern Ontario, with an
analyzed central pressure of 982mb (28.99 in Hg) located northeast
of Lake Ontario. An occluded boundary extended southeast from the
low towards the triple point over western New York, with a warm
front stretching eastward across southern New England, and a cold
front racing eastward along the interior Mid-Atlantic through the
Carolinas. Surface observations and RADAR indicated warm, moist
air surging northward in the warm sector of the system, with rain
being reported as far north as the New Hampshire/Canada border.
Further west, frigid, arctic air continued to pour southeastward
with an exceptionally sharp temperature gradient along the cold
front tracking eastward, with temperatures dropping 15 - 25
degrees F in a matter of hours. Furthermore, northwesterly winds
behind the frontal boundary continued to produce localized
lake-enhanced snowfall across the Great Lakes, as
synoptically-forced snow pushed northeastward into Ontario. While
snowfall has waned across the northern Plains and Upper Midwest,
strong wind gusts in unison with freshly fallen snow has produced
ground blizzard conditions at times.

Areas of moderate to locally heavy snow and strong winds will
continue to impact the Midwest and Upper Great Lakes today as low
pressure strengthens, resulting in strong southwesterly winds
producing lake-enhanced snowfall. 2-4 foot snow totals will be
possible in favored snow belts through the weekend. Ahead of the
potent cold front tracking eastward, moderate to heavy rain will
continue across New England with a Slight Risk of Excessive
Rainfall being issued across much of Maine and New Hampshire. In
the wake of the cold front, frigid Arctic air will arrive over the
eastern half of the country through Friday evening with high and
low temperatures likely to be as much as 20 to 30 degrees below
average. Blizzard conditions will persist over portions of the
Plains and Midwest through Friday night with a combination of
heavy snow and strong winds. Please consult WPC's latest winter
weather Key Messages for updates on the progression this week's
blizzard and Arctic blast impacting the country.

The next Storm Summary will be issued by the Weather Prediction
Center at 900 PM CST. Please refer to your local National Weather
Service office for additional information on this event.
