Storm Summary Number 4 for West Coast to Upper Midwest Storm System
NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD
700 PM PST Sun Jan 01 2023
...Heavy precipitation continues in the Intermountain West and is
beginning to spread into the Central Plains as the system
progresses inland...
Winter Storm Warnings and Winter Weather Advisories are in effect
for the Sierra Nevada, east central Nevada, much of Utah,
Colorado, Wyoming, Nebraska and South Dakota, southern and central
Minnesota, northwestern Iowa and Wisconsin, part of southeastern
Idaho, and the higher elevations of Arizona and New Mexico.
High Wind Warnings are in effect for southwestern New Mexico.
Wind Advisories are in effect for parts of southern California,
Arizona, and New Mexico and West Texas.
For a detailed graphical depiction of the latest watches, warnings
and advisories, please see www.weather.gov
At 600 PM PST...A frontal system was analyzed stretching across
the Intermountain West, with several centers of low pressure
embedded along the boundary. Two strong low pressure centers were
analyzed in southern Nevada and southern Utah with pressures of
998 mb (29.47 in Hg) and 997 mb (29.44 in Hg), respectively. A
cold front extended from southern Nevada through western Arizona
while a stationary boundary extended east from southern Nevada
through Colorado and into the southern and central Plains. Latest
radar and surface observations show moderate to heavy
precipitation continuing across the Intermountain West and light
precipitation beginning to spread into the central Plains. The
heaviest precipitation was focused ahead of the cold front in
Arizona and New Mexico where precipitable water values were
highest. Precipitation was falling as rain at low elevations and
mixed precipitation and snow at mid and high elevations. In
addition to precipitation, impressive wind gusts have been
reported across California and the Great Basin as a result of the
tight pressure gradient across the region.

Precipitation is forecast to continue across the Intermountain
West with snowfall mainly confined to the higher elevations
(>6000ft). Snowfall totals of 8-12 inches are likely in the
highest terrain areas with some locations forecast to receive 1-2+
feet of snow through Monday afternoon. Maximum snowfall totals
will be focused across the San Juan Mountains of Colorado, the
Unita Mountains of Utah, and portions of central Wyoming. As the
system continues to push east through midweek, the energy
associated with it will consolidate across the Rockies, with
low-pressure developing over the central and southern Plains and
intensifying while tracking towards the Upper Midwest. This system
is forecast to produce a large swath of moderate to heavy snow,
sleet, and freezing rain as it tracks across the central United
States.
The next Storm Summary will be issued by the Weather Prediction
Center at 700 AM PST. Please refer to your local National Weather
Service office for additional information on this event.
