Storm Summary Number 01 for Northern Plains through Midwest Winter
Storm
NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD
300 PM CST Fri Jan 14 2022

...Ongoing over-running heavy snow storm dropping out of the
Northern Plains into the lower Missouri River Valley...

Winter Storm Warnings are in effect across northeast South Dakota,
southwest Minnesota, much of central Iowa into northeast Missouri
and extreme western Illinois.

Winter Weather Advisories are in effect for eastern South
Dakota/southern Minnesota through to Eastern Kansas to Western
Illinois and nearly all of Missouri.

For a detailed graphical depiction of the latest watches, warnings
and advisories, please see www.weather.gov

At 200 PM CST...A pair of low pressure centers in southeast South
Dakota and northeast Kansas were dropping southward while
transferring strength toward deeper low across western Oklahoma.
The low in southeast South Dakota has a central pressure of 1018
mb, or 30.06 inches of Mercury, and a stationary arctic boundary
extends from it through north central Illinois into the southern
Great Lakes. The other low entering northeast Kansas has a central
pressure near 1012 mb, or 29.88 inches of Mercury and is at the
intersection with an older polar stationary front extending across
Missouri into Tennessee. A strong cold front originating from the
Pacific is connected through the lows and southward into the
southern High Plains. Strong winds behind this front with modest
moisture is producing strong upglide ascent from west to east,
eventually supporting heavy snowfall generally east of the
Missouri River. Current RADAR and observations denote moderate to
heavy snowfall occurring from southwest Minnesota across much of
central to eastern Iowa and starting into northern Missouri; while
freezing rain/drizzle has been reported generally bounding the
Missouri River from Southeast South Dakota into northeast Kansas.
As the upper-level trough of low pressure continues to dig south
across the Rockies, the overall storm will continue to drop in a
outh-southeastward into Missouri and western Illinois.

The northern low is expected to weaken and transfer energy toward
the low across northeast Kansas and weaken slightly as the overall
system shifts focus to the low in Oklahoma/Texas later this
evening. This will reduce the best overall ascent of westerly flow
to over-top the colder air to the east supporting heavy snow up to
1"/hr across Iowa into northern Missouri. However, ample moisture
and ascent will remain to continue producing heavy snow across
Missouri and western Illinois overnight tonight into tomorrow
morning while slowly weakening in intensity throughout the day
tomorrow before ending in earnest overnight tomorrow evening into
Sunday across northern Arkansas. An additional 4-8" are expected
across south-central Iowa with 3-6" across northern Missouri and
far western Illinois. Snowfall rates may reach 1"/hr within those
areas. As the winds shift away and further south, lingering 1-3"
is expected across central to southern Missouri into Arkansas
before the event is over.

The next Storm Summary will be issued by the Weather Prediction
Center at 900 PM CST. Please refer to your local National Weather
Service office for additional information on this event.
