The occluded low tracking through southern Arkansas will track
east today gradually strengthening as it does thanks to a vigorous
upper low tracking east towards the Lower Mississippi Valley. As
the TROWAL pivots over northern Arkansas, strong vertical ascent
and cooling temperatures aloft will allow areas currently seeing
rain in northern Arkansas to changeover to snow. Snowfall rates as
heavy as 1" per hour or higher are possible across northern
Arkansas and far southern Missouri today with moderate snowfall
possible in eastern Oklahoma. Latest snowfall forecasts indicate
over 6" of snow is possible in the higher elevations of northern
Arkansas with most totals ranging anywhere from 2-6" in southern
Missouri, western Arkansas, and eastern Oklahoma. This winter
storm is then poised to produce significant snowfall totals from
the Tennessee Valley to Southern Appalachians and dangerously icy
conditions in the Carolina Piedmont and far northwest Georgia
tonight and into Sunday morning.
The next Storm Summary will be issued by the Weather Prediction
Center at 900 PM CST. Please refer to your local National Weather
Service office for additional information on this event.
