At 800 AM CST...A surface low with a central pressure of 998 mb,
or 29.47 inches of Mercury, was analyzed over eastern Alabama at
approximately 33.1N, 85.5W. An occluded front winding
east/southeast from the low pressure center connected to a
secondary low in southern Georgia. From this secondary low, a cold
front trailed south through western Florida while a warm front
extended through southeast Georgia. Doppler radar and surface
observations indicated that mixed precipitation was falling
throughout portions of the Southeast, Tennessee Valley, and
southern Mid-Atlantic. Patches of freezing rain were also observed
from Tennessee to Kentucky and throughout the Carolinas. Moderate
snow was falling over an area from far western South Carolina to
south/southwest Virginia. In the warm sector of the system Doppler
radar detected both stratiform and convective rainfall, with
strong storms along and ahead of the trailing cold front.

Throughout the day the occluded system is forecast to slowly
progress northeast while slightly strengthening as the two low
pressure centers are expected to converge later today over the
Carolinas. The most significant snow accumulations will likely
occur in a narrow swath from Tennessee to Kentucky and along the
Blue Ridge Mountains, where snowfall rates exceeding 1-2" per hour
will be possible. Dangerous icy conditions with accumulations up
to and exceeding 0.25" are also expected for the Carolina Piedmont
and far northwest Georgia.
The next Storm Summary will be issued by the Weather Prediction
Center at 900 PM CST. Please refer to your local National Weather
Service office for additional information on this event.
