Rockies to the Midwest today as cold air surges south behind an
advancing cold front...

and Southern Rockies, Central and Southern Plains, Middle and
Lower Mississippi Valley, Ohio Valley, Great Lakes, and the
Northeast.

Ice Storm Warnings are in effect for portions of eastern Arkansas,
northwestern Alabama, western Tennessee, far southeastern
Missouri, and the southern Ohio Valley.

Winter Storm Watches are in effect for portions of the Lower
Mississippi Valley, Tennessee Valley, Ohio Valley, Lower Great
Lakes, and the Northeast.

Central and Southern Rockies, Central and Southern Plains, Middle
and Lower Mississippi Valley, Ohio Valley, and the Great Lakes.

For a detailed graphical depiction of the latest watches, warnings
and advisories, please see www.weather.gov

At 800 AM CST...A cold front was analyzed extending from the Lower
Great Lakes through the Ohio Valley, Mississippi Valley, and much
of central Texas before making a sharp northward turn into New
Mexico. Further north, a quasi-stationary boundary was observed
meandering through the Northern and Central Rockies. Doppler radar
and surface observations indicated that moderate to heavy snow was
falling over a large area behind the cold front from the Great
Lakes to the Central and Southern Rockies, with much of the
heaviest snow falling between eastern Kansas and central Michigan.
A sharp temperature gradient along the frontal boundary was also
observed, facilitating the development of mixed precipitation in
the form of freezing rain and sleet from Illinois through Texas.
Meanwhile, ahead of the cold front warm air predominantly in the
40s and 50s has limited precipitation to fall as rain only.

Throughout the rest of the day moderate to heavy snow and mixed
precipitation will slowly advance southward behind the draping
cold front. The heaviest snowfall is expected over the Southern
Rockies and the Ohio Valley, while the more significant freezing
rain accumulations will likely occur from central Texas through
southern Indiana. This is expected to be a prolonged winter
weather event, so travelers should remain cautious and prepare for
hazardous conditions and disrupted travel.

The next Storm Summary will be issued by the Weather Prediction
Center at 900 PM CST. Please refer to your local National Weather
Service office for additional information on this event.
