At 800 PM CST...A wavy stationary boundary extended southwest from
the shore of Lake Erie in central Ohio through the Ohio and Lower
Mississippi Valleys before curving westward through eastern and
southern Texas, eventually curving back northwestward through the
Rio Grande Valley of New Mexico. National Weather Service Doppler
Radar indicated widespread precipitation occurring along and
behind this boundary from the Lower Great Lakes southwest through
the Ohio and Mississippi River Valleys, the Plains, and into the
southern Rockies. Surface observations indicated that temperatures
dropped somewhat gradually behind the boundary leading to a
precipitation transition from rain near the boundary, to a mix of
freezing rain and sleet just north and west of the boundary, and
eventually to snow further north of the boundary. In addition to
the wintry precipitation, a cold Canadian air mass continued to
spread southward behind the boundary across the Plains and
Midwest, with temperatures in the teens from the Middle
Mississippi Valley and Southern Plains to below 0 in the Upper
Midwest and Northern Plains.

Widespread wintry precipitation is forecast to continue over the
Midwest and Plains where precipitation has already fallen, as well
as spread eastward into the Mid-Atlantic, Northeast, and New
England. The shallow, cold air mass spreading southeastward across
the Mid-Atlantic, Ohio Valley, Lower Mississippi Valley, and
Southern Plains is expected to result in significant freezing rain
from southern New York to central Texas. Totals between 0.1 to 0.5
inches are likely, with locally higher amounts from 0.5 to 0.75
inches focused across western Kentucky and Tennessee as well as
eastern Arkansas. In addition, an axis of heavy snow is forecast
further north in the colder air mass behind the front from New
England southwestward through Oklahoma and northwest Texas.
Forecast totals range from 4-8 inches, with locally higher
amounts, for the southwestern portion of the event from northwest
Texas to Illinois, increasing to 8-12 inches from the Lower Great
Lakes northeastward to New England. The heaviest snow is expected
across New York and western New England, where 12-18 inches of
snow is forecast.
The next Storm Summary will be issued by the Weather Prediction
Center at 900 AM CST. Please refer to your local National Weather
Service office for additional information on this event.
