NWS Weather Prediction Center College Park MD
900 AM CST Thu Feb 03 2022
...Widespread heavy wintry precipitation continues from the
Southern Plains northeastward into parts of the Mississippi and
Ohio Valleys to the interior Northeast as a frigid air mass
continues to spread southward...
Ice Storm Warnings are in effect near portions of the Mississippi
and Ohio Rivers, from eastern Arkansas and northwestern
Mississippi, to far southeastern Missouri and western Tennessee,
to far southern Illinois and Indiana, as well as much of western
and central Kentucky.
Winter Storm Warnings and Winter Weather Advisories are in effect
for New Mexico into the Southern Plains, Lower/Middle Mississippi
Valley, Tennessee and Ohio Valleys, and into the Northeast.
Wind Chill Warnings and Advisories are in effect for portions of
the Northern and Central Plains and Upper Midwest.
For a detailed graphical depiction of the latest watches, warnings
and advisories, please see www.weather.gov
At 800 AM CST...A slow-moving cold/stationary front stretches from
northern New England southwestward just south of the Lower Great
Lakes and into the Ohio Valley, Tennessee Valley, and Lower
Mississippi Valley and into the western Gulf of Mexico. National
Weather Service Doppler Radar indicated widespread precipitation
occurring along and behind this boundary from the Lower Great
Lakes southwest through the Ohio and Mississippi River Valleys,
the Southern Plains, and into the Southern Rockies. Surface
observations indicated that temperatures dropped somewhat
gradually behind the boundary leading to a precipitation
transition from rain near the boundary, to a mix of freezing rain
and sleet just north and west of the boundary, and eventually to
snow farther northwest of the boundary. In addition to the wintry
precipitation, a cold Canadian air mass continued to spread
southward behind the boundary across the Plains and Midwest, with
temperatures below 0F in the north-central U.S., and even into the
-20s and -30s in North Dakota and northern Minnesota.

Additional freezing rain, sleet, and snow accumulations are
expected across the Southern Plains, Lower/Middle Mississippi
Valley and into the Ohio and Tennessee Valleys through tonight,
with a few additional inches of snow and a swath of impactful and
potentially damaging freezing rain accumulations of 0.25-0.5
inches, locally higher, forecast just to the south of the snow
axis. As the front continues to slowly track eastward, snow and
ice potential will increase across the northern Mid-Atlantic and
Northeast today and tonight before ending later tomorrow. Snow
totals for the Interior Northeast are likely to exceed a foot,
while freezing rain accumulations of over 0.1 inches and locally
exceeding 0.25 inches should stretch from much of Pennsylvania and
southern parts of New York and New England.
The next Storm Summary will be issued by the Weather Prediction
Center at 900 PM CST. Please refer to your local National Weather
Service office for additional information on this event.
